Data Link Station
The Institute has an efficient air-ground data link for analysing air-ground integration, remote control of aircraft and for assisting flight tests. The distinctive landmark of this data link station is a 30 metre-high antenna tower north of the Koppe-Haus.
The core element is an experimental S-band data link that can send both audio signals and data in parallel in both directions on broadband via a full-duplex transmission. The ground station is accessible via optical fibres, Intranet and Internet inside and outside the German Aerospace Center. It is therefore relatively easy to provide measurement data as well as audio and video transmissions and to connect systems on board test aircraft to the DLR simulation network in order to conduct more research.
Alternatively, a serial, bi-directional connection can be set up for data transmission via a 170 MHz link. These existing capabilities are complemented by a VDL mode 2 standard data link system. Moreover, a VHF system is in place for radiotelephony communication (air-ground communication and experimental radio).
To receive ADS-B signals, the data link ground station is equipped with two different receiver systems. These receivers, which are operated in cooperation with DFS, deliver transponder information within a radius of approximately 300 km around Braunschweig.
Mobile stations
Using a mobile container system, all data links permanently installed in Braunschweig can be set up at different locations.
For simple test set-ups, a test vehicle is also used, which is equipped with three workstations and the necessary HF equipment as well as a power generator.
