The Institute of Data Science

Data science methods are one of the foundations for data-driven decisions that are increasingly finding their way into our digitalized world. In order to be able to act securely on a database, the entire data process must be taken into account, from the data source and processing to machine learning, AI and ultimately the basis for decision-making for humans and algorithms. This complete data path forms the data backbone, so to speak, of all data-driven processes, data-driven development and data-driven products.

The Institute

At the Institute of Data Science in Jena, we are working on making the data backbone a reality for all DLR application areas (aviation, space, energy, transportation, security). To this end, we develop and research methods in interdisciplinary work with a focus on applications such as sustainable and circular processes, resilient supply chains, data-driven value chains or robust decision support. The methods developed in this way are applied in cooperation with other DLR institutes and external partners, either as part of joint projects or as part of technology transfer activities.

In order to realize the data backbone, we are involved in three research fields that cover the entire data value chain:

  • Data Acquisition and Mobilization: research into the provision of high-quality data for industry and science. This is divided into methods for data collection and data sharing on the one hand and approaches for explorative analysis and structuring of data on the other.
  • Data Management and Enrichment: Research and development of methods, tools and systems with a focus on information extraction, data exchange, semantic descriptions and models, efficient data management, visualization and exploration of raster, time series and point cloud data.
  • Data Analysis and Intelligence: Research into methods for generating knowledge from data and developing a deeper understanding of complex data sets and the associated processes. Here, data-driven approaches are developed to gain insights and make informed decisions - a concept we refer to as “knowledge from data”.

In order to be able to work with large amounts of data, use and further develop current methods of machine learning and artificial intelligence and investigate data-driven processes together with our partners, we operate an HPDA cluster, which is available at DLR and can also be used by other research institutions or SMEs as part of joint activities.

Our goal
At the Institute of Data Science, we develop and research methods to create knowledge from data, develop innovations and make decisions. In doing so, we work along the entire data life cycle to realize a data backbone for our respective application areas.
