The DLR Institute of Structures and Design in Augsburg features three furnaces for consolidation of thermoplastic materials and curing of thermoset materials. Processing temperatures of up to 450°C can be realized. This facilities provide full-scale parts manufacturing under industrial conditions. For example, pressure bulkheads (4.5 m diameter) and boosters (up to 6 m in length) have already been manufactured with partners from the aerospace industry. Lightweight components based on carbon fibres and epoxy resins are infused and cured in single-sided moulds. These moulds are made of carbon fibre-reinforced polymers or invar. Maximum weights of up to 20 tonnes can be handled by a universal transportation vehicle.
