OPTSAL Situation Center

Since 2021, we have been operating the Situation Center, a laboratory for developing and testing innovative approaches to staff work and operational command. This infrastructure is part of our Helmholtz Innovation Lab OPTSAL and is operated by the Department of Security Research and Application. The Situation Center offers partners a familiar and realistic environment for staff work and operational command with easy access to established situational awareness and command information systems. In addition, connections to external hardware and software systems can be provided, enabling the import of new (especially real-time) data, simulations and the simulation of operational processes by end users.

We also give our partners access to the pool of existing data from previous deployments. This enables the rapid testing of new algorithms and the application of learning processes.

The enormous advantage of this facility results from the flexible usage options. Similar Situation Center are usually part of operations and are therefore not available for experiments. The OPTSAL Situation Center is technically equipped to meet the standards of modern operational staff rooms, thus enabling the transfer of knowledge and technology.

The main features are:

  • In operation since 2021
  • Stationary and mobile end devices are available for situation display and application development
  • Flexible network technology for realizing different requirements in terms of security and network topology
  • Realistically implemented command information system based on CX5 (Eurocommand)
  • Connection to a high-performance computing system (HPC) for processing large amounts of dataIntegration of additional communication infrastructure, GIS, databases, etc. possible
  • Contemporary media technology:- 430cmx240cm video wall,
    • Flexible configuration and display of up to 4 sources simultaneously
    • Digital media control,
    • 86" SMART board,
    • wireless media player,
    • video conferencing system
    • Separate control room for monitoring and experiment control Space for up to 20 people

Utilization possibilities are:

  1. Demonstrations, training, exercises as part of joint knowledge and technology transfer projects in OPTSAL
  2. As a partner of HIL OPTSAL - for OPTSAL-independent / individual use
  3. As an external user of the infrastructure (e.g. for exercises, simulations, etc.)
