OPTSAL Innovation Lab

The Optical Technologies for Situational Awareness Lab (OPTSAL) is a Helmholtz Innovation Lab at the DLR Institute of Optical Sensor Systems. The focus is on advancing the research and development of optical technologies for situational awareness in disaster and large-scale emergencies as well as technology transfer. The Innovation Lab was founded as a research facility open to external partners, in which scientific expertise and the needs of users and industry are brought together. The aim of the lab is to establish a long-term competence and development center for optical situation detection in the context of safety and security applications.

The camera system MACS-nano
Hand in hand with our partners from industry and research and the forces of public safety authorities and organisations, we at OPTSAL drive the most promising technologies to market maturity. In order to bring our MACS camera system into the everyday life of authorities and organizations with security tasks, we rely on cooperation with strong companies and end users.

Infrastructures and resources

For the purpose of project and cooperation activities, infrastructures are provided to develop new optical technologies, methods and functional chains for situation pictures together with users, researchers and industrial partners and to validate them from an operational point of view. OPTSAL offers a unique environment for partners to test and further develop technologies and procedures in a realistic operational environment and to bring them into application. OPTSAL offers a fully equipped situation center and a development laboratory (DevCenter) for integrated hardware and software development. These infrastructures are available to our constantly growing community for development projects, technology testing and training purposes.

Focus on cooperation

The operational benefits are not so much determined by individual technologies, but rather by their integration into existing workflows and the continuous processing, consolidation and presentation of available systems, data and information. The Live-Lage project is a use case that already demonstrates the successful collaboration between different players within the framework of OPTSAL.

Whether users, industry partners or scientists - OPTSAL engages in a personal exchange with interested parties and initiates ideas, technologies and new projects with them.
