Wind Energy Experiments

Assembly of the generator on the OPUS 1 at the WiValdi research park

Together with other DLR institutes and partners from the Research Alliance Wind Energy (FVWE), the Wind Energy Experiments (WX) facility is leading the construction of the Krummendeich WiValdi Wind Research Wind Farm. WX operates the Research Wind Farm and coordinates wind energy research at DLR.

The Research Wind Farm serves as a central research infrastructure for national and international wind energy research. Two 4.26 MW wind turbines, five measurement masts and over 3,000 sensors make the Research Wind Farm a globally unique research infrastructure with far-reaching potential. The expansion with a further modular 500 kW wind turbine is already underway. The Research Wind Farm enables holistic wind energy research on an original scale in order to develop technologies to increase the acceptance, efficiency and cost-effectiveness of wind turbines. WiValdi will be available to the wider research community in science and industry for joint projects with DLR once trial operation has been completed.
