Project title | EGNSS DFMC for GBAS bAsed opeRations |
Goal | Further develop and validate the GBAS-DFMC solution in order to modernize and improve flight operations. |
Period | 2024 |
Funded by | EU |
Project lead | WWB, WWE |
The project aims to contribute to the development of an improved, more reliable and more accurate GBAS solution that meets the increasing demand for improved approach and all-weather operations in the ever-growing air traffic volume on the one hand and the sustainability requirements to meet the EU Green Deal targets on the other.
GBAS paves the way for improved approach and optimized descent procedures and enables the reduction of noise, fuel consumption and emissions, thus contributing to more environmentally friendly flights. In addition, this project will help to achieve the goal of an early introduction of Dual-Frequency Multi-Constellation (DFMC) GBAS, which, thanks to its increased robustness, will enable rationalization of ILS CAT III and thus benefit the aviation community. The application of GBAS together with EGNSS will technically improve the current system and have a positive impact on the economy and society.
The main objectives of this project are therefore to further develop and validate the GBAS-DFMC solution in order to modernize and improve flight operations, focusing on ensuring safety, availability and robustness in all situations, including challenging ionospheric conditions; analyze the distinguishing characteristics of Single Frequency Multi-Constellation or SFMC, GBAS enabled by the addition of Galileo, and facilitate CAT-II service for GAST-C users in the air based on a GAST-D ground station with EGNSS integration (GAST C and D correspond to standardized single-frequency single-constellation devices capable of CAT-I and CAT-III services respectively).
