The surveillance and protection of the maritime domain is essential for a multitude of different actors. As different as the actors and their considerations are, for example, in the area of emergency and rescue services alone, as different are currently the methods and tools with which they obtain an overview of current events. DLR already offers an immense pool of methods, tools and expertise that can be used selectively for this purpose. One question of particular interest here is the extent to which solutions for specific safety- and security-relevant use cases can be transferred to other scenarios: What general possibilities exist to modularise solutions and procedures in a suitable way to make a variety of relevant capabilities available to the broadest possible user group? What are the general limitations of such an approach? And what is feasible and practicable?

Goals and Methodology

The project is to address these questions using the example of maritime security. The DLR Maritime Security Research Network already possesses a sufficiently large pool of methods, tools and expertise to realise this project within their group. On the one hand, the general possibilities and limitations are to be studied and assessed. On the other hand, in addition to a general concept, a concrete draft is to be developed on how the idea can be implemented in practice. This draft will then form the basis for the successive development of a DLR Toolbox for Maritime Security (DTMS), which will specifically support users in their tasks in the field of maritime security.

Innovations and Perspectives

The initial analysis of the requirements for the DTMS is carried out independently of users and scenarios. This results in the innovative approach of a universal, modular platform that can be used for a variety of questions and tasks. Nevertheless, the results of the study can be used to realise a concrete development that will benefit users, for example from the area of emergency and rescue services.
