Security and defence research at DLR

Security is a basic human need. Furthermore, it represents one of the most important challenges for the current and future networked, globalised society and economy. DLR's security programme brings together research and development activities from the individual research areas of aeronautics, space, energy and transport that are relevant to defence and security. These activities are planned and managed in coordination with partners in government, science and industry.

Pro­gramme and strat­e­gy

Security research represents both a separate research area and a cross-sectoral task at DLR. In this cross-sectoral area, research and development activities in the fields of aeronautics, space, energy and transport that have relevance for defence and security are planned and controlled in coordination with partners in government, science and industry.

Research infrastructure

Establishing and operating large-scale research facilities is one of DLR's statutory tasks. They form the backbone of research in space, energy, transport, security and digitalisation. The facilities are used across institutes and programmes at DLR and made available to partner organisations from science and industry.

Civil security research and dual-use

Civil security research at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) focuses on researching and developing solutions and technologies that ensure the protection of citizens and critical infrastructures from damage caused by natural disasters as well as major emergencies, threats from terrorism and organised crime.

Defence research

Defence research is an integral part of DLR's programme. In the interest of achieving a mutual transfer of research and technology, defence-related topics are integrated into DLR's multidisciplinary civilian research activities. The aim is to make the best possible use of synergies and to add specific defence-related aspects to the portfolio through research and development projects.

Mar­itime Se­cu­ri­ty

Maritime safety and security are of great importance to the Federal Republic as an export-oriented country. DLR makes an important contribution to increasing maritime safety and security. The maritime industry benefits not only from the authorities and public institutions, but also from the innovative solutions provided by DLR's security research.

From Aachen to Zittau and from Stade to Weilheim, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) is represented by its institutes and facilities at 30 locations across Germany. One of the latest waves of establishments took place in several steps starting in 2017 with a total of 15 new institutes.
