Institute of Technical Physics

The Institute of Technical Physics develops laser systems for applications in aerospace, security and defence sectors.

Due to its many years of expertise in the development and evaluation of high-power laser systems and technologies for active optical systems, investigations into beam propagation over long distances and laser-matter interaction, the Institute of Technical Physics is a centre of excellence in defence technology research and civil security research.

At the institutes sites in Stuttgart and Lampoldshausen, scientists, engineers and technicians work in three interdisciplinary departments on the realisation of laser-based systems in the four key areas:

These key areas are supplemented by investigation on the propagation and scattering of intense laser radiation in the atmosphere. Experiments are being done on a laser free-beam range at the Lampoldshausen location under different weather conditions over the entire year. Work on the detection and protection against unmanned aircraft is based on possible dangers that have arisen from the increased spread and use of these systems in recent years.
