Institute of Atmospheric Physics
The Institute of Atmospheric Physics investigates the physics and chemistry of the global atmosphere from the Earth's surface up to the thermosphere.
It provides a boost for the expansion path until 2035. The project has the challenging task of bridging the gap from fundamental research on the physics of the near wake through modeling to the first prototypes for application. Experimental and numerical research contributions of different quality levels and representativeness generate a unique database for modeling and validation based on the Research Wind Farm WiValdi. Reliable models for inflow, turbulence, and loads in the near wake are developed, the physical processes of which have not been fully understood nor mapped in the industrial process chain to date. The new models lead to the creation and evaluation of initial prototypes for further scientific and industrial exploitation. The DLR sub-project deals with the collection and analysis of datasets in the WiValdi research park to validate wake models. Additionally, fully resolved simulations of reference cases are created to serve the physical understanding in modeling, and a mid-fidelity tool is further developed, enabling the rapid generation of a large database of flow situations in the near wake.
