Johanna Piepjohn receives Budde Award 2024

Johanna Piepjohn, member of the Astrobiology group, Radiation Biology department, was awarded the Budde Award 2024 for her master's thesis titled "Horizontal Gene Transfer in Space - Preparation of the ISS Experiment Bacterial Conjugation."The Budde Award is awarded annually to graduates of the Fachhochschule Südwestfalen for outstanding achievements in their engineering-related thesis.

The thesis was written as part of a German-Belgian cooperation project, led by Rob van Houdt (SCK CEN) as Principal Investigator and Petra Rettberg (DLR) as Co-Investigator. The fluorescence microscope (FLUMIAS) used for the project is being developed by the German Space Agency at DLR.

The €5000 prize was established by the Budde Foundation, founded by Mr. Dipl.-Ing. Dirk Budde and his wife Ursula Budde. The foundation supports science, research, and vocational education.
