Development of a digital ecosystem for the aerospace industry

The Institute for AI Safety and Security is a key partner in the BMWK-funded Aerospace-X project, which is developing a future-proof digital ecosystem for the aerospace industry under the leadership of Airbus. The aim of the project is to enable new forms of data-based collaboration and to strengthen the resilience of supply chains through digital continuity and standardised processes. The project is part of the Manufacturing-X initiative.

Contribution of the Institute for AI Safety and Security

The Institute for AI Safety and Security has taken on key work packages in the areas of project governance, cyber security requirements, data standardisation and interoperability.

  • Project governance defines the framework and processes by which a project is planned, executed, monitored, controlled and closed, and includes provisions such as project classification, methods and procedures, decisions and approvals, controlling, documentation, tools and other aspects.
  • Cyber security requirements define the measures and methods to be implemented to better ensure and protect the information security of communications and data exchange in the Aerospace-X digital ecosystem.
  • Data standardisation means that a common representation and formatting of data is defined. This is the basis for making data from different applications and companies interoperable, i.e. exchangeable between independent, heterogeneous systems in an efficient, smooth, lossless and usable way.

These areas are critical to creating a secure and robust digital ecosystem that meets the high demands of the aerospace industry. By working closely with leading companies and research organisations, the Institute is making a significant contribution to the establishment of secure and interoperable solutions for use in the fuselage, cabin and propulsion production chains. A key objective is to ensure data security while increasing efficiency.

Institute for AI Safety and Security

At the Institute for AI Safety & Security, we research and develop AI-related methods, processes, algorithms, technologies and execution and system environments. Our focus is on safe and standard-compliant AI, cyber security in open data and service ecosystems and AI, as well as autonomous mobility and logistics facilitation.

Institute of Structures and Design

The research activities in the Institute of Structures and Design are concerned with the development and implementation of composite materials with polymer and ceramic matrix in innovative, high performance structures.

Institute of Data Science

The main focus of the Institute of Data Science in Jena relies on finding solutions for the new challenges of the digitalisation era. Research is being conducted into topics related to Data Management, IT Security and Smart Systems (Industry 4.0).

Institute of Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul

The Institute of Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul based in Hamburg Finkenwerder conducts research in the field of optimisation and automatisation of maintenance processes and explores innovative technologies for diagnostics, maintenance and modifications of airborne systems.

Institute of System Dynamics and Control

The main focus of the Institute of System Dynamics and Control is the requirement driven, system dynamically holistic design, optimal feedforward and robust feedback control of complex safety critical systems for spaceflight systems, aircraft, road, railway and planetary vehicles, as well as industrial robots.

Institute of Lightweight Systems

The DLR Institute of Lightweight Systems has the know-how for the design and realisation of adaptable, efficient composite structures and lightweight systems.
