Best Innovation Award for FCH2RAIL
The project consortium of the EU project FCHRAIL was honoured this week with the Best Innovation Award by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership.
Coordinated by DLR, the participants from industry and research in the joint project FCH2Rail (Fuel Cell Hybrid Power Pack for Rail Applications) have jointly developed and built a new type of hybrid drive for trains. The technology enables climate-friendly continuous rail transport between the city and surrounding areas, which was previously served by diesel vehicles.
CAF and CNH2 have developed a test system for fuel cell hybrid PowerPacks that does not require a real train. The tests can determine the performance and operation of the individual parts of the power pack or the entire system. It was used as part of the FCH2RAIL project to validate system performance and optimise energy management.
The award was presented on 20 November 2024 by Joanna Drake during the European Hydrogen Week 2024 and accepted by Beatriz Nieto Calderón (CNH2) and Manex Zabala Mikeleiz (CAF), both representing the innovators, and Hong Hanus, representing the project coordinator DLR.
