DLR tests components for solar power plants in Morocco and South Africa

The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) is testing the performance and durability of reflectors and receivers for solar power plants in Ouarzazate, Morocco and in Bokpoort, South Africa. The tests that the DLR researchers developed together with the Spanish energy research centre CIEMAT (Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas) are among the tender specifications issued by general contractor SENER for selecting suppliers in the construction of the parabolic trough power plants. These quality controls are the first to permit an assessment of solar power plant component quality and longevity.

DLR provides freeware simulation program for assessment of renewable power plant projects
The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) has released a free version of the simulation program FreeGreenius. The program brings together technical and commercial aspects and is able to calculate the yield that a renewable power plant project will bring at a certain location. In addition, it determines how a system must be designed and constructed to ensure it can feed the targeted quantity of power into the grid. Thus, system planners and investors are provided with a preliminary overview of whether, and under which conditions, a solar thermal power plant, a wind turbine or a photovoltaic power plant would be best suited to the site in question.
