Wind energy is a fast growing sustainable source of electrical power which uses the services of wind turbines as energy converters. The drivetrain is the subsystem of wind turbines through which mechanical power is transferred from the rotor hub to the electric generator, hence plays an essential role in system dynamics and efficiency of wind turbine operation. Wind turbines involve unsteady operational loads that affect the gearbox and other transmission elements. Transient events like emergency stops can lead to very high loads, thus requiring large breaking torques to decelerate the rotor. This can result in the transmission of high torques through the drivetrain. To facilitate the design and production of highly efficient and reliable wind turbines, the proposed project will deal with the search of key parameters, known problems as well as tradeoffs made in wind energy systems, focusing more on how they may affect the design of the drivetrain. The main objectives of this work are to investigate existing architectures, determine the functionality and key parameters of subsystems for efficient wind turbine drivetrains. Additionally, modeling, evaluation and comparison of two existing wind turbine drivetrains architectures should be performed. Besides that, a database of the existing drivetrain systems should be prepared for future tasks.
